FAQ

Q:  What age does my child have to be to attend Calvin?

A:  Students who are four years old by September 1 are eligible for prekindergarten at Calvin. Calvin serves students in prekindergarten - grade eight.

Q:  What are Calvin's school hours?

A:  School begins at 8:25 am and ends at 3:00 pm.

Q:  Does Calvin have Extended Care services?

A:  Yes, an organized Extended Care program is available for Calvin students from 6:45 am - 8:25 am and from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm. Enrichment opportunities are also available such as: foreign language, pottery painting, drama, handbells, art, etc.

Q:  What are Calvin's hours for prekindergarten and kindergarten students?

A:  Calvin offers half-day and full-day services to parents of prekindergarten and kindergarten students: half-day hours are: 8:25 am - noon; full-day hours are 8:25 am - 3:00 pm.

Q:  What transportation do you offer Calvin students?

A:  All full-day students are eligible to ride Calvin busses for a nominal yearly fee.

Q:  Do Calvin students wear uniforms?

A:  No (see Dress Code in Parent Handbook)

Q:  Do Calvin students have hot lunch?

A:  Students are offered hot lunch one day a week at a nominal cost to parents. On non-hot lunch days, students bring lunches to school.

Q:  What classes are offered at Calvin?

A:  In addition to a strong academic curriculum of Language Arts, Science, Math, Social Studies, History, Bible, and Technology, students participate in art, physical education, music, libary, Spanish, and computer classes. The comprehensive music program consists of choirs, bands, private music lessons and marching band. Students participate in a state-wide science fair and junior engineering program, drama and fine arts, and an extensive sports program (seasonal sports for grades 6-8, boys and girls). The Discovery Program assists students with special abilities.

Q:  Do Calvin students participate in field trips?

A:  Yes, students at each grade level go on educational field trips and participate in local service projects.

Q:  What does Calvin's facility have to offer?

A:  Calvin offers large, well-lit classrooms; an art room, music room, band room, foreign language room, gym, stage, computer lab, library and two playgrounds.

Q:  How do Calvin's students score on standardized tests?

A:  Calvin students take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) every fall. In 2004, the class composite scores ranged between the 82nd and 97th percentile in the National Percentile Rank. This means Calvin students, on average, outperformed 82-97 students out of 100 nationwide. In the Private School Norms, Calvin students are also above average with class percentile averages ranging from 55-74 (outperforming 55-74 students out of 100 in private schools nationwide).
